Guru Gobind Singh College for Women, named after the tenth Sikh Guru, was established in 1973 by the Sikh Educational Society with the primary mission of providing quality education to women. To realize its mission, the college is imparting value based education to young women synthesized with their intellectual, spiritual, social and physical development so that the quality of their life can be enhanced. In the last almost four decades of its existence, the college has made utmost endeavors to train individuals to become responsible citizens of the globalized world. The college fully realizes its responsibility in equipping the students with adequate competencies to emerge as successful professionals, entrepreneurs, leaders, administrators, etc. Through various activities such as debates, declamations, creative writing workshops, seminars, talks, brain storming sessions, etc. the students are given exposure to build robust confidence and self- esteem. To stir and motivate under performing students, the college provides remedial classes. The advanced learners are provided with extra books/ material by the teachers who set suitable goals before them so that they feel adequately challenged. They are motivated for attaining excellence in the University examination through various incentive schemes such as scholarships, fee concessions, Roll of Honor and prizes. To facilitate access to higher education, students from socially and economically weaker sections are given financial aid which subsequently leads to their academic growth.

Catering to the total development of its students, the college fosters in them the spirit of healthy nationalism, social responsibility, moral uprightness, feelings of compassion and love, and above all a life of service and sacrifice as exemplified by Guru Gobind Singh ji. The inculcation of these eternal values is achieved through various activities such as the celebration of the birth anniversary of Guru Gobind Singh ji, the patron saint of the college, as Founder's Day, visits to old age homes, orphanages, Institute of Blind School etc. The college nurtures compassionate disposition and encourages the students to contribute to the alleviation of suffering in a troubled world.

The college is playing a progressive role in transforming the society for the better by holding literacy campaigns, and by developing entrepreneurial skills among women. In its own small way, the college is trying to eliminate social evils. Societal issues are deliberated upon and discussed at various seminars/talks held in the college sometimes in collaboration with external agencies/ NGOs. Gender sensitization is one of the prime concerns; the college holds awareness talks and theatrical performances to sensitize the larger audience on gender related issues. The social orientation of the students is made possible through the National Social Scheme and National Cadet Corps programmes.

The rapid development of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) is now inextricably linked with modern education. The college strongly integrates ICT into the delivery of its educational programmes. There are well equipped computer labs with broadband internet facility and fully automated library. The students play an integral role in various college activities by becoming class representatives, members of the Student Council, College Magazine and Alumni Association.

With its impeccable reputation, the Department of Physical Education has attained quite a name among the top institutions of the city by winning prestigious tournaments at various levels. The department makes ceaseless efforts to enable the students to compete at the highest state and national levels in number of sports. It is commendable that the college has been thrice the winner of the Over-All Inter College Championship of Panjab University, in the recent sessions. The role of the college is to create infrastructure which facilitates optimum efficiency of our sports women for achieving excellence in various competitive events at all levels. The Physical Education Department initiatives are geared towards achieving these objectives.

There are various clubs and societies that manage academic and cultural activities of the college. Students are encouraged to participate in co-curricular and extra-curricular activities and are given opportunities to exhibit their innate talents/skills .The Placement Cell of the college supports students in career choices and helps make job placements in industry, banks, call centers, educational institutions, etc. Apart from the other important committees, the college has a Grievance Cell to look into the complaints and grievances of the students. The Counseling Cell provides necessary guidance and advice to help students succeed in the face of increased competition while maintaining healthy perspectives.

The remarkable growth and enhanced prestige of the college as a leading educational institution is owed as much to the inspiration of a visionary and committed Management and the dynamic and progressive leadership of the Principal Dr. Charanjeet Kaur Sohi as to the institution's strongest asset: the teaching faculty. A dedicated team of highly qualified staff bring to the institution a rich accumulation of knowledge, experience and zeal to inspire the students to achieve their goals. Our students enjoy a zestful, thriving and active life on campus as they participate in wide spectrum of student activities throughout the year.

In the future the college plans to introduce new employment oriented courses of study, and update the infrastructure accordingly. Greater focus on the use of technology and innovative methods of teaching would be employed while retaining the best practices of the past.It is the enduring spirit of our students that goads us to set higher standards and reach for higher goals year after year.
